Maintenance work on a tolled national highway means a live-lane closure: a crew, a works truck, and traffic arriving at highway speed with only cones between them. On this corridor Safeway Concessions positioned an Ador truck mounted attenuator at the rear of every closure as standard practice.

When a heavy vehicle failed to merge and struck the works truck, the attenuator did exactly what it is engineered to do, converted the impact into controlled deformation instead of transmitting it into the truck and the crew ahead. The crew was unharmed and the errant vehicle's occupants survived.

The unit was replaced and the closure resumed the same shift. The corridor's operating procedure now mandates a TMA at the taper of every mobile works zone.

The attenuator took the hit so the crew didn’t. Every closure on this stretch runs with one now.
